Biography
Isabella Aung is a Research Fellow affiliated with the Myanmar Policy and Community Knowledge (MyPACK) Hub at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto. She completed her PhD coursework in Political Studies at Queen’s University and holds an MA in Political Science from Simon Fraser University. She earned an honours degree in International Relations with a minor in Mathematics from Linfield University. She is an incoming Juris Doctor (JD) candidate at the University of Ottawa.
Isabella’s research interests include women’s political participation, minority rights, digital authoritarianism, transnational repression, and international defence, with a focus on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS). She is trained in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Her regional expertise is in Canada and Southeast Asia.
Currently an SDG 5 Gender Equality Fellow at the United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada), Isabella is also a Shangri-La Dialogue Young Leader. She has previously held research and policy fellowships with the UBC Myanmar Initiative, the University of York, Queen’s University, and the Centre for International and Defence Policy (CIDP). During her doctoral studies, she received a scholarship from the Research Network on Women, Peace and Security (RN-WPS) at McGill University. In 2023, she received a MINDS Targeted Engagement Grant from Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND).
